Why We Said Goodbye to Dedicated Desks (and What We Built Instead)

West Hartford Coworking Shared office

If you’ve been around West Hartford Coworking or Windsor Worx for a while, you might remember the Dedicated Desk era. A familiar setup. Your “spot.” A place where you could leave your monitor, settle in, and just… work. And honestly? Dedicated desks served our community really well for a long time. But over the past couple of years, something shifted — not because people stopped wanting focus or consistency, but because the way we all work changed. So we changed too.

Today, we’ve fully transitioned away from Dedicated Desks and built two options that better support real, modern workdays:

  • Hot Desks (flexible, easy, productive)

  • Shared Offices (a little privacy + structure without the cost of a full office)

Here’s the story behind the shift — and how it’s helping our members work better.

The Truth: Our Workdays Don’t Look Like They Used To

Coworking used to be mostly about getting out of the house.

Now it’s often about balancing:

  • deep focus work

  • video calls

  • hybrid schedules

  • client meetings

  • unpredictable weeks (where one week is nonstop and the next is quiet)

Dedicated desk rooms were designed for a simpler work style — and as more members started taking calls, leading meetings, and working different hours, those rooms started feeling… less supportive. Even with only a few people in a space, overlapping Zoom calls can get distracting fast (for you and your desk-mates). And what we heard most often was some version of: “I love having a consistent space… but I also need flexibility and a little more privacy.”

So instead of trying to force a square peg into a round hole, we built something better.

Option 1: Hot Desks — for Flexible Workdays and “Just Get Me Out of the House” Energy

Hot Desks are perfect if you:

  • work different days each week

  • like variety (and not feeling locked into one setup)

  • want a professional space without overthinking it

  • want to drop in, focus, and head out feeling accomplished

Hot desks are still a huge part of the community vibe — they’re where quick conversations happen, new connections are made, and “hey what do you do?” turns into real collaboration. Both West Hartford Coworking and Windsor Worx offer ala carte, drop-in hot desk access as well as monthly memberships, and they’ve become the go-to for guests and members who want flexibility without sacrificing structure.

Option 2: Shared Offices — the sweet spot between “open coworking” and “private office”

This is the big one.

Windsor Worx Shared Office

A lot of people don’t need a full private office five days a week… but they do want:

  • a quieter space

  • more privacy for calls

  • the ability to leave a few things behind

  • a consistent home base when they’re here

That’s exactly why we created the Shared Office model.

At West Hartford Coworking, Shared Offices give members a semi-private, consistent setup with bookable access — plus practical perks like storage and conference room time. It’s designed for people who want their work life to feel calmer and more contained, without the cost of going fully private.

At Windsor Worx, Shared Offices are part of the same evolution — bringing more structure and privacy to members who want a steadier work routine, especially in a community that includes a lot of commuters and hybrid workers.

What We Hope This Change Feels Like (for You)

More than anything, we want our spaces to support your day — not add friction to it.

This shift is about making it easier to:

  • focus when you need focus

  • take calls without stress

  • show up on the days that matter

  • feel like you belong here (even if you’re not here every day)

Whether you’re someone who loves the energy of hot desks or someone who needs that quieter shared-office vibe, we want you to feel like there’s a place for you at both West Hartford Coworking and Windsor Worx.

If You’re Not Sure Which One Fits, Here’s a Quick Guide

Choose Hot Desks if you…

  • want flexibility and simplicity

  • don’t need a consistent setup

  • like being in the mix of the community

Choose Shared Office if you…

  • want a quieter, more private experience

  • take regular calls or meetings

  • want a consistent place to land without renting a full office

Come Try a Day and See What Works

If you’re a current member and you’re curious about trying the other setup, or if you’re thinking about joining and not sure where you fit — we’re happy to help you figure it out.

The best way to know what you’ll love is to spend a day in the space. Because coworking isn’t just about desks. It’s about building a work life that actually works.
